The magic of two-shot molding isn’t just in the mold design; it’s in the marriage of materials. Selecting the right combination is a science critical to the success of your preform production. Not all polymers are compatible, and their properties must be carefully matched.
The most common combination is various forms of PET:
Virgin PET / rPET: The standard for sustainability. rPET core provides recycled content, while virgin PET outer layer ensures performance and clarity.
PET / EVOH: The gold standard for oxygen barrier applications. EVOH is highly sensitive to moisture, so it must be perfectly encapsulated by the PET layers.
PET / Nylon: Another strong option for barrier protection, with different performance characteristics than EVOH.
Color Combinations: Using different colored PET materials to create unique visual effects.
Key Compatibility Factors:
Adhesion: Materials must bond strongly without delamination.
Processing Temperatures: Melting points must be close enough to avoid degrading one material while processing the other.
