For a precision tool like a two-shot preform mold, a rigorous validation protocol is non-negotiable. 1. First Article Inspection (FAI): After the initial mold trial, we produce a set of preforms for a First Article Inspection. This involves using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) to verify that every critical dimension of the preform—weight, wall thickness, gate vestige, and overall geometry—is within the specified tolerances of the mold design.
2. Layer Distribution Analysis: For two-shot molds, verifying the consistency of the material layers is paramount. We cross-section sample preforms and use microscopes or specialized imaging to measure the thickness of each layer at various points, ensuring uniform distribution as per the design intent.
3. Functional Performance Testing: The true test of a preform is the bottle it becomes. We blow-mold sample preforms into bottles and subject them to rigorous tests:
Top-Load Testing: Measures the bottle’s resistance to axial compression, critical for pallet stacking.
Burst Pressure Testing: Pressurizes the bottle until failure, verifying its strength for carbonated applications.
4. Production Run Validation: Before shipment, the mold is run continuously for an extended period (e.g., 24-72 hours) to monitor its performance under stable conditions. We document process parameters, cycle time consistency, and overall equipment efficiency (OEE) to prove the mold’s production readiness.
